FAQ

Here you will find answers to commonly asked questions.

What is a leased beat?

Leasing a beat or instrumental is a form of ‘lending’ certain rights and usage of copyrighted music (intellectual property).  In other words, the owner of a copyrighted musical work can lease (‘lend’) his or her musical work to another entity (person, company, corporation, etc.) under an agreement with terms and conditions.  In most cases, the entity (person, company, corporation, etc.) will purchase an exclusive or non-exclusive license (with terms and conditions) from the copyright owner in order to use the copyrighted musical work in conjunction with vocal synchronization.

Exclusive vs. Non-Exclusive

When a copyright owner sells an exclusive license for his or her copyrighted musical work, it means the copyright owner is granting certain rights, exclusively to the buyer of the license.  In other words, if a copyright owner (LICENSOR) sells an exclusive license to a buyer (LICENSEE), the copyright owner can no longer sell any additional licenses to any other entity for the use of that specific musical work (usually limited to a duration of time set forth in the license agreement).

When a copyright owner sells a NON-exclusive license for his or her copyrighted musical work, it means the copyright owner is granting certain rights, NON-exclusively to the buyer of the license.  In other words, if a copyright owner (LICENSOR) sells an NON-exclusive license to a buyer (LICENSEE), the copyright owner retains the right to sell additional licenses to any other entity for the use of that specific musical work.

Master Buy-Out

When a copyright owner sells the copyrights of his or her intellectual property (musical work), this is considered a ‘Master Buy-Out’.  In other words, when a copyright owner sells the copyrights of his or her musical work, it means the copyright owner is literally selling all reserved rights to the buyer.  This means the buyer now owns all rights, any and all multi-track recordings, two track masters, midi sequencing sessions, etc.
